Chapter 14

Lucy

“WHY ARE YOU involving Roxy in this? She’s not part of this family.” Troy takes the shovel from me and starts flipping up dirt. Vinny gave us the body back, and now we have to bury him.

“She knows a lot about the dead, and I want to talk to Dad.”

My neck makes a cracking noise as I lean it to my shoulder, trying to relieve the tension that’s building. My phone starts vibrating in my back pocket. I yank it out and answer before I look to see who it is.

“What?”

“Is this Lucy Davenport?”

“Yes, whatever it is, this isn’t a good time.”

“This is Principal Beaver. Do you know your children aren’t in school today?”

Shit. How could I have forgotten it’s a school day. “They’ve both come down with a stomach bug.” Lie, lie, lie.

“This is their last week of school before summer is out, and I was hoping to chat with you again about Bets. Did you make her an appointment with a counselor?”

“Yes. She will start seeing her next week.”

“Good because the school board has decided that if she still has her imaginary friend when school starts, she will not be able to attend.”

“Isn’t that a little drastic. I’m sure Bets isn’t the only kid with an imaginary friend.”

“That’s true, but she’s the only one that has an imaginary friend that acts out, and the other children are afraid of.”

“I assure you I have a handle on it. Her friend will be gone shortly.” More lies. I don’t have a handle on anything.

“Will the children be back in school tomorrow?”

“Yes. I’m sure it’s a twenty-four-hour bug.”

“When you bring them, would you please bring the name and number of her therapist so that it can be placed in her file?”

“Will, do.” I hang up before she can ask me anything else.

“Is everything okay?” Gemma rubs her hand down my arm.

“Yeah, I forgot what day it is and didn’t send the kids to school.”

“Isn’t that part of Daisy’s job?”

“It is, but I’m the mom, and maybe it’s time I took on my responsibility. Daisy seems to be struggling right now with Tommy and Ford.”

Rye got another shovel out of the back of his van and is helping Troy dig.

“I brought I blanket we could wrap the body up in before we place it in the ground.” Gemma heads for the van.

His body is starting to smell and bloat, making my stomach roll. How the hell did things go from bad to worse?

When Gemma returns, she gets his feet, and I take his upper body and roll him onto the blanket. His hand with the chewed off fingers plops out, and I nearly vomit.

“Oh God, that’s so gross.” Gemma runs off in the bushes, puking.

I lift my shirt and cover my nose to block the horrific smell coming from him. A breeze comes out of nowhere, making it worse.

“Did you feel that?” Roxy comes up behind me. “There is a spirit here that wants to tell us something.”

“Yeah, it’s telling us he smells rotten and to hurry up and bury him already.
